Footprints are what we unavoidably leave, handprints are what we intentionally give - a contribution that causes positive change
Our planet is facing serious economic, social and environmental challenges. To address these, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set globally valid priorities and targets until 2030. They represent a unique opportunity to eradicate extreme poverty and set the world on a sustainable course. Governments around the world have already committed to these goals. Now it is time for action to be taken.
The Liechtenstein Bankers Association (LBA) sees the SDGs as an orientation framework for designing, managing and communicating strategies, goals and business activities sustainably in the future for the benefit of future generations.
In October 2021, the Liechtenstein Bankers Association (LBA) joined the NetZero Banking Alliance as a Supporting Organisation and matched our three large member banks (LGT, LLB and VP Bank) by committing to net zero. At the same time, we have set ourselves ambitious targets on the path to net zero, deciding to take into account the Science-based target standards in our Company Carbon Footprint (CCF) which meant for us to:
1. |
first avoid and then reduce any CO2 emissions |
2. |
aim for rapid and significant emissions reductions |
3. |
set both, short- and long-term climate targets, whereby investments in climate protection projects with sink benefits (removals) are used for all residual emissions that cannot be avoided. |
4. |
act beyond the value chain, hence taking into account emissions from SCOPE 1, 2 and 3 |
5. |
(only) offset those emissions which are unavoidable |
And this is what we did over the few month. As the last of these steps, in September of last year, together with KlimaDAO, we offset a multiple of our effective CO2 emissions on-chain, specifically through the use of the Polygon Blockchain, and in this way supported a reforestation project in Colombia.
However, all this «only» relates to our footprint. Equally important, if not more so, is our «handprint», i.e. what we actively contribute and where or how we make an effective impact on achieving the SDGs.
We want to report transparently on both. Learn more about our CO2 footprint and how we contribute to the SDGs in the brief overview of our sustainability report.
