Biodiversity Loss
About Deep Dive Night
The Liechtenstein Bankers Association has designed the series, «Deep-Dive» as a quarterly presentation and discussion round of current asset class themes.
The intent of the Deep Dive Series is to educate on a deep and practical level about the trending asset classes of our time in a non-product pitch environment. LBA has invited experts to lecture on the main aspects.
Biodiversity Loss
The five main causes for biodiversity loss according to the European Parliament are:
- Changes in land use (e.g. deforestation, intensive mono-culture, urbanisation)
- Direct exploitation such as hunting and over-fishing.
- Climate change.
- Pollution.
- Invasive alien species.
Extinctions have occurred throughout history but the current loss in biodiversity is referred to as the 6th Extinction and is occurring at the fastest pace in history. Biodiversity and the natural cycle provide the essentials for humanity and are significant financial factors.
What is the cost of recovery should this cycle not be slowed and or reversed and can this be lined to the increase in natural disasters?
This year’s Global Risk Report by the World Economic Forum ranked nature 2nd among the top ten long-term business risks. Private companies and investors realize that their businesses depend on nature and healthy ecosystems, and that the current biodiversity loss crisis translates into financial, reputational, transition and business risks. Furthermore, the interaction between climate change and biodiversity loss can create a vicious cycle of escalating effects and both crises must be tackled together.
